Studying the Advanced Masters in Business

“I am obsessed with seeing new places and experiencing new cultures. After visiting Australia two years ago, I was completely captivated by the environment and especially the lifestyle, as it seemed to fit my outdoor personality and interests. Upon returning to the UK, I felt a desire to return to Australia and get back to the sun, sea, sand and surf that I fell in love with a couple of years ago.

“The choice of UQ was simple. Not only is it one of the top universities in Australia, but the University is situated in sunny Queensland, just a short drive from the beaches and the surf, and close to many stunning tourist spots such as Fraser island, Moreton Bay, Noosa and the Whitsunday Islands.

“I have found that UQ is a unique international university, as the other students on my course – as well as my circle of friends – are from places all over the world including Scandinavia, Germany, France, South Africa, Canada, USA and New Zealand. Meeting so many people has been a highlight of my course so far.

“The Advanced Master of Business is challenging, however, the lecturers are helpful and always have their doors open. I never thought I would say the words ‘I am actually enjoying studying again,’ though I think the barbecues and the lifestyle influences this somewhat.

“Studying an Advanced Masters at one of the top universities in Australia will, I’m sure, benefit my career. Not only does the degree itself offer me a sort of secure status, but the modules within the course give me a much more analytical and theoretical business mind in preparing for the challenges of the business world.

“I feel very much at home here in Australia. The first few weeks after moving here were difficult, however, as the weeks went on I found a good circle of friends from many different backgrounds, all with the long-term view of living in Australia.

“The Brisbane lifestyle is typically Aussie, with regular Sunday barbecues before a few drinks down at one of the variety of bars along the riverside, which was exactly what I was looking for and what I got, a true, blue Aussie experience! There is also the perk of studying at the stunning UQ St. Lucia campus which is situated right on the river.

“As I mentioned earlier I am a very outdoors person. My hobbies extend from rock-climbing to canyoning, kayaking, running, trekking, surfing, dune-boarding and so on. Coming from the UK, there are not many places to experience these activities, especially when grey skies and rain are forecast every day. Here in Brisbane, however, I find myself involved in these activities on a regular basis and am meeting others who have similar interests to me. Then of course, as I mentioned earlier, the Sunday barbecues at the end of a tough week studying are always a welcome break!

“I have been involved in the University’s beach volleyball club, which has been a great way to meet people. I have also been taking Capoeira classes at UQ. I came across this sport in South Africa and took it up in New Zealand when I found myself living with a few Brazilians. Not only is this UQ activity very physically challenging, it is something that I have always wanted to study. I have also met some good people through the programme.

“If you’re looking for an experience and want to study at a top university where you can meet people from different countries and cultures while studying on a beach with the sun on your back and the smell of barbecues in the air surrounded by some of the most stunning environment Australia has to offer, then I’d say that the University of Queensland is your university!”
